Loved the WWII elements of Kane
3.5 stars
I feel I may have missed something crucial by jumping into this series with no knowledge of the prior books. And that fault lies with me. Given the books aren't chronological, it shouldn't matter but feel I might have liked Kane more if I had.
To be fair, I loved the start and the end in dealing with Roosevelt and other elements of WWII. Kane would have been a 5 from me if that was the meat in this sandwich. It was the middle section, the mission in LA, that didn't sit entirely well with me. It seemed superfluous. Lots of interesting, diverse characters but I felt as if all the women and their sensibilities were caricatures as a man would like them and no where near reality. They came across too sexy, edgy, tough like they needed to prove their pin-up status. It just felt artificial so didn't endear any of the women to me. Kane also felt a bit 2D but I did like Gus. He was a stand up guy and very useful, too.
As I said, the WWII bits were ace and I would happily read the other books in the series to see what happens in this intriguing mix of fact and fiction.
